Travel Tales

Travel Tales is a travel magazine that features first-hand travel experiences of people exploring various
destinations across the United States. The magazine showcases a diverse range of perspectives and stories from travelers of all ages, backgrounds, and travel styles. From the urban cityscapes of New York City to the natural wonders of Yellowstone National Park, Travel Tales offers readers a glimpse into the adventures and experiences of real people traveling in the USA. The magazine’s articles cover a wide range of topics, including budget travel, family travel, solo travel, adventure travel, and more. With its engaging and informative content,
Travel Tales inspires readers to explore new destinations and experience the joys of travel firsthand.

Target Audience

The target audience is likely to be adults of all ages, with a particular interest in travel and exploring the beauty of the United States. While there is no specific age range for the target audience, it can be assumed that the majority of readers will be in their late twenties to sixties. This is because this age group is often more financially stable and has the ability to travel more frequently, making them more likely to be interested in a travel magazine like Travel Tales. However, the magazine's content may also appeal to a younger audience who love to travel, immerse themselves in different cultures, experience new adventures and who also enjoy reading about other people's experiences and are looking for inspiration for their next trip.

Background

Travel Tales is a travel magazine that was founded to share the stories and experiences of real travellers who have explored the beauty of the United States. The magazine focuses on providing readers with an immersive and engaging reading experience by featuring personal travel stories and practical travel advice. Each monthly issue of the magazine highlights one of the top 5 places based on different natural landmarks or tourist attractions in the USA. For example, one of their monthly issues talks about the top 5 National Parks of the USA that includes Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, Grand Canyon, and Zion National Park, and showcases the unique experiences and perspectives of travellers who have visited these destinations. It’s aim is to inspire readers to embark on their own travel adventures and to provide them with the information and inspiration they need to plan their trips.

Design System

The design system of this travel magazine is showcased through its five unique covers. To create a cohesive and visually appealing experience, I have assigned a distinct color to each monthly issue, aligning it with the theme it represents. For instance, the national parks issue features a vibrant yellow accent color, while the scenic drive issue
incorporates a refreshing green hue. Similarly, the waterfall and lakes issue is accompanied by a captivating blue shade.

As our magazine revolves around firsthand travel experiences shared by passionate travelers, these specific accent colors play a crucial role in highlighting the articles that delve into these travel adventures. By utilizing these colors strategically, I ensure that our readers can easily identify and engage with the captivating stories and insights shared within the magazine's pages.

Objectives

The objective of my project is to create a travel magazine which provides readers with an immersive travel experience through the stories and experiences of real travellers. This magazine aims to showcase the top 5 national parks in the USA, including Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, Grand Canyon, and Zion National Park, and to inspire readers to visit these destinations for themselves. It will provide practical travel tips and advice to help readers plan their own trips to these national parks.

Design Problem

To create a visually engaging and informative travel magazine that captures the beauty and essence of the top 5 National Parks of the USA while also presenting the personal experiences and perspectives of real travellers. It must also be user-friendly and provide readers with easy-to-digest information and practical travel advice.

Design Process

I researched different travel magazines/publications which talk about different natural landmarks and tourist attractions in the US to gain insights and inspiration. Based on all the above information, I decided to focus on the top 5 National Parks of the US as one of the monthly issue themes for the magazine. In the later ideation stage, I brainstormed and developed ideas for the magazine's layout, typography, photography, and other design elements. I then created mock-ups of the magazine cover & spreads, and designed the covers for the other monthly issues of the magazine based on different themes.

Design Solution

I choose to name the magazine “Travel Tales-take a travel turn” as the word "travel" suggests the act of exploring new places and cultures, while "tales" implies the sharing of personal stories and experiences. The addition of "take a travel turn", it can be interpreted as an invitation to readers to step outside of their comfort zones and embark on their own unique travel journeys. Additionally, the use of alliteration with the repeated "T" sounds in "Travel Tales - take a travel turn" makes the title catchy and memorable, helping to attract potential readers and stand out in a crowded market of travel magazines. I tried to create a visually stunning and informative publication that features personal travel stories, stunning photography, and practical travel tips and advice. The design incorporates clean and modern typography, vivid imagery, and easy-to-navigate layouts that provide readers with an immersive and engaging reading experience.
